Thekkady – know the facts :
Thekkady is one of the Wonderful wildlife reserves in India filled air with aromatic spice scented plantations Periyar Wild Life Sancturary is a pictureque also provide mountaineering for trekkers.
The Places of Interest :
(1) Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary :
In 1978 the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was declared open. Out of its total 777 sq.km, 360 sq.km is full of thick greenery dotted with plantations. The artificial lake filled with water from Mullaiperiyar Dam is eye catching and nevertheless visitors can see wild life from boat. The everlasting may be the herds of wild elephants, deer and bison that frequenting the lake to quench the thirst. Sanctuary can be seen through treeking, boating and jeep safari. The timing : from 6.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
(2) Kurisumala :
Provide youths trekking and tourists can have bird's view of Kumily and Periyar Wildlife sanctuary.
(3) Kumily :
Tourists can buy natural aromatic spices like Cardamom, Coffee and Pepper here. Kumily is 4 kms off Thekkady).
(4) Murikkady :
Murikkady which is also nearer (5 kms) to Thakkady is too offering spices.
(5) Pandikuzhi :
Natural streams and flora and fauna makes it fruitful picnic and pictureque.
(6) Chellar Kovil :
15 kms from Kumily enroute to Theni. Picture waterfalls and cascades.
(7) Mangala Devi Temple :
15 kms from Thekkady. Being situated 1337 m above the sea level is of Kerala influenced architecture. It provides eagle's eye view of beautiful hills and villages of Tamilnadu. Visitors allowed only on Chitra Pournami day. On other days tourists should have special permission from forest ranger.
(8) Vandiperiyar :
18 kms from Thekkady. Flower garden is in the Government Agricultural Farm and varieties of roses is feast for our eyes. Famous for tea, coffee and pepper plantations all along.
(9) Vandanmedu :
One can see full of cardamom plantations and the biggest auction market for cardamom is also there.
10) Pullumedu :
43 kms from Thekkady and 26 kms from Periyar. Special permission should be obtained from Wildlife authorities. The Ayyappa Temple and Makara Jothi also visible from here. Wild life can be seen by jeep savari.
(11) Ramakalmedu :
43 kms from Thekkady and 75 kms from Munnar. From the this mountains one can see villages of Bodi and Cumbum and fresh green plantations natural air stimulates us.
