Facts about Coorg
Coorg district spread over 4102 sq.km. The Coorg when it was under British rule coffee plantations were set up as they compared Coorg with Scotland. Coorg now named Kodagu situated on the Western Ghats, wonderful hill station situated in Karnataka. Madikeri is the headquarters of Kodagu. Madikeri is called also as Mercara. Madikeri is connected by way of road from Mangalore, Hassan, Mysore, Bangalore in Karnataka, Kannur, Thalassery, Wayanad in Kerala. From Mangalore connected by ghat road called Sampaje – Madikeri, From Kasaragod connected by ghat road called Panathur – Bhagamandala Ghat Road, From Kannur connected by ghat road called Perumbad – Virajpet Ghat Road.
Madikeri can be reached by 2 hours from Mysore and lot of transport services operating from Mysore. One can see lush greenery, thickly spread forests, coffee plantations wherever, streams. Virajpet (Virarajendrapet), Kushalnagar, Somwarpet and Gonikoppal are the other towns to name.
Coorg being landlocked no connectivity directly by train or by air. Nearest railway station from Kerala is Thalassery and Kannur. Mangalore, Hassan, Mysore are the stations from Karnataka. The airports nearer to Coorg is Mysore airport (distance to Madikeri is 130 kms, 115 kms from Virajpet) and Mangalore airport (distance to Madikeri is 140 kms and distance to Virajpet is 172 kms.)
Kodagu is considered rich with wildlife and has three wildlife sanctuaries and one national park: the Brahmagiri, Talakaveri, and Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuaries, and the Nagarhole National Park, also known as the Rajiv Gandhi National Park.
The intensity of rainfall is more in July and August.
Places of Interest : Raja's seat in Madikeri, Talacauvery which is 44 kms from Madikeri, situated 1276 metres above the sea level in the Brahmagiri Hill. Bhagamandala is also called Triveni Sangamam as it is the converging point for three rivers. The holy river is believed to cure Physical and Psychological problems. Temple for Lord Agastheeswara is attracting many tourists. Talacauvery's origin is about 4187 feet in hill slopes. The pilgrims can take bath as amenities provided there.
