SHIMLA

The prolonged Gurkah Wars went down in the 19th century in 1815 to 1816. The British who conquered put hold its military strength here permanently. Charles Pratt Kennedy who was Hill Council area agent insisted to build house for him in this area. It is historically mentioned as Sheyamalaya Shumlah. The British used Shimla as its summer capital. The buildings started to raise here and there. After independence Shimla retained its colonial heritage rich buildings even old iron lamp posts and beautiful gardens. The Scandal point was associated with Maharaja of Patiala, as it was his escapades, from where one can view snow clad mountains.

Rail :

Shimla is connected with Kalka on the rail network. The distance between them is 96 kms. 103 tunnels in between and the very longest one is 1.2 kms long.

By Air :

Shimla Airport is at Jubbarhatti, 23 kms from city and is connected to Chandigarh, Kullu, Delhi. It has daily flights from Delhi and Kullu. On Tuesday and Thursday Jagson Airlines flies Delhi-Shimla-Kullu-Gaggal and return. Archana and KCV fly between Delhi and Shimla on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The flights are however not very regular and one should confirm beforehand about the schedules and availability.

Shimla is connected by daily Vayudoot flights from Delhi and Kullu. Indian Airlines too regularly maintains it flight to jubbarhatti which on regular season time increases its flight to six days a week.

One who is looking to reach Shimla by air, the Chandigarh Airport and the New Delhi Airport are the closest one. There are regular flights from pune to Chandigarh as well as the domestic airport connects to all other major cities in India

Places of Interest in Shimla :

The Mall : This is one of the largest stretch of pedestrian shopping mall. People here comes to this mall for the facilities of restaurants, clubs, bank, bars and the Theatre. To say particularly Ridge and Scandal Point where the locals meet offen here to converse with them.

Christ Church : Built in Neo-Gothic style in 1857 to serve English men is situated in the Ridge. One of the monumental landmarks of Shimla. This is one of the enduring legacies of British stands as a testimony for faith, hope, charity and so on.

Jakhu Hill : It is the highest peak of the Shimla mountains. Jaku temple situated here is one of the oldest temple dedicated to Hanuman. Distance to this place is 2 kms from Shimla, peak is at 8048 ft. above the sea level. It is an eye catching view point. Small type of horse named Pony is available to ride with and also taxi service is available from Ridge to Jakhu Hill. It is also used by trekkers. Large number of monkeys kept watch for the pilgrim's feedings.

Shimla State Museum : The State Museum in Shimla is in the heritage building once housed by Lord William Beresford who was the Militry Secretary to the Viceroy Lord William Bentick. Govt. restored the building for museum purpose without damaging its cultural potency. The museum was opened in 1974 to store archaeologically and historically important artifacts. Bronze, numismatic, paintings are exhibited here. Situated on the hill top of Inveram. Entry fee is Rs. 20 for Indians and Rs. 100 for Foreigners. Camera use : Indians Rs. 50.00, Foreigners : Rs. 100.

Indian Institute of Advanced Studies : The very first designs was prepared by Captain H.H.Cole of the Royal Engineers. It was first presented before Lord Lytton in 1878. It took Rs. 38 lakhs rupees to finish the construction at that time. The approval of the project was by Lord Dandolph Churchill, Secretary of State for India by that time. It has beautiful gardens along with pine trees. It provides Literature and Politics for studies.

Summer Hill : Height of the peak is 2,123 metres (6,500 ft.) 5 kms to the west of Shimla Ridge. Mahatma Gandhi stayed here during his Shimla visits. The University of Himachal Pradesh is functioning here.

Annandale : Situated 2-4 kms at the height of 6,117 ft. having wonderful ground (now in Army's usage) Favourite for cricket and polo.
