About Bodh Gaya
Bodh Gaya is the place where Siddhartha Gautama got enlightement is in Bihar, the state in India. It is 100 kms from Patna in the Southern side. He got enlightenment under Bodhi Tree and thereafter called Buddha.
Siddhartha Gautama the founder of Buddhism was born in 567 B.C. in Lumbini Garden near Kapilavastu. His father Suddodhana of Sakya Clan and mother Mayadevi. His mother died at an early age Gautama was brought up by his aunt Prajapati Gautami. He was made to marry Yasodhara at the age of 16 and he got son named Rahul. He saw very old man, a diseased man and a Corpse that turned him away from this worldly life.
Prince Siddhartha felt uneasy over the sufferings of people, he politely left home to seek the Truth. He followed several Hindu practices but to no avail and constantly kept him seeking answer for the sufferings of people. Finally sat under Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya penancing himself. At the age of 35 he got enlightenment and become Buddha ('the enlightened one') He went all over to deliver his sermon and become a preacher for the next forty five years. His first sermon is held at Sarnath near Benares.
Sariputta, Moggallanna, Ananda, Kassapa and Upali were the important disciples of Buddh. Several kings like Prasenajit of Kosala and Bimbisara and Ajatasatru of Magadha accepted his doctorines and became his disciples. He found 4 important truths – the word is full of suffering, the cause of suffering is desire, if desires removed sufferings too can be removed. This can be followed by Eightfold Path.
Several North Indian states embraced the Buddhism which started spreading into West Asia and Ceylon. King Asoka played important role.
Buddhism made worthwhile contribution towards Indian culture.
