GOA - THE PLACES OF INTEREST :

Goa is a state in western India with coastlines stretching along the Arabian Sea. Its long history as a Portuguese colony prior to 1961 is evident in its preserved 17th-century churches and the area’s tropical spice plantations. Goa is also known for its beaches, ranging from popular stretches at Baga and Palolem to those in laid-back fishing villages such as Agonda.

Rock Art : A stone age rock art (carved rock) at Kajur, Panasaimol, Sanguem Taluk and Mauxi in Sattarai Taluk is a historical site.

WATER FALLS, LAKES :

Mayem Lake : Situated in Bicholim Taluka in North Goa, east of the town Masuka, is most frequented by tourists is a sleepy village undeterred by urban occupation. Varieties of bird life can be seen. Lake resorts also there.

Kesarval Spring : Spring is located 22 kms off Panaji in Main National High Way proceeding to Margao. The Kesarval Spring may be reached after crossing Zuari river and traversing through Cortalim village. It is most celebrated.

Dudhsagar waterfalls : Falling from 600 ft from Western Ghats is magnificent and must be seen as it looks like milk flowing from mountain. It is located in Sanguem Taluka. It invites tourists inflow. During monsoons one can see its vigour and fury.

Aravalem Waterfalls : Falling from 70 ft. Situated little distance away from town Bicholim, through road from Mayem Lake, in the village of Sanquelim. Other place of interest is Aravelem caves 1 km off Sanquelim. From here within 10 minute drive one can reach Harvelem waterfalls. Water falls from 50 m. Sanquelim can be reached by bus also.

SANCTUARIES :

Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary : Situated in the island of Chorao along river Mandovi. Growth of Mangroves made varieties of bird's nesting there. It is bird watcher's paradise and rightly called after Dr. Salim Ali. From Panaji to Ribander Ferry Wharf, one has to take bus or cab and thereafter has to ferry across River Mandovi to reach Chorao.

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary : In the south of Goa in Canacona Taluka. 2kms from Poinguinim (which is 10 kms off Chaudi, the main town of Canacona Taluka on the national highway 17) It is evergreen forest dotted up with tall trees and green plantations all across.

Bondia Forest : Situated 38 kms from Margao, attaracting children and naturalists. deer park, rose gardens are added attractions. Distanced 50 kms from Panaji, 38 kms off Margao, 20 kms off East Ponda. Jungle resort and Cottages are available.

Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary : Housed with wildlife and birds, situated on north of Panaji on the road to Belgaum. Molem National Park is inside this.

TEMPLES :

Tambadi Surla Temple : Ancient one 65 kms off Panaji, amid forest area accessible via 22 kms route from Valpoi in Sattari Taluka. Built in Jain Style Architecture and about its history is there. Its tower doesn't have top it has never been completed.

Shri Chandranath Temple : Situated on the top of 300 m hill Chandranath at Paroda. Chandreshwar presiding deity. Temple typically built to provide moon light fells on Lingam on full moon days. The hill is surrounded by fresh greenery and it is enchanting.

Brahma Temple : In the village of Brahma Carambolim which is 7kms from Vlpoli. Built on the 5th Century it is dedicated to creator God Lord Brahma in the Hindu Triumvirate.

Sri Vasudevanand Saraswati Datta Mandir : Situated in the Ambirna Ward of Socorro village. Barley one-and-half kms from National Highway 17 and 7 kms from Mapusa and Panaji City. Having idol of Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati called as Temple Swami along with Panchayatan. Other deity is Bhuvaneshwari. Every Thursday Maha Arati is performed at 7.30 a.m.

Shri Shantadurga (Sangodkarin) Temple : Situated at Sangolda in Bardez Taluka and 7kms from Panaji. The deity is Goddess Durga named as Shantadurga. Originally the temple was constructed many years ago but fearing Portuguese the deity was shifted away to Bicholim and again idol was reinstalled in the year 2000.

Shri Bhagavati : In the Pernem Taluka, 28 kms from Panaji. Dates back to 500 years old, during Dussehra time, many number of pilgrims throng here.

Saptakoteshwar : It is one among 6 temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. 35 kms off Panaji can be reached by boat from the Island Divar. It is built under Kadamba clan.

Ramnath Temple, Bandivate : Dedicated to Lord Rama believed to be that of Rama after killing Ravana took remorse to killing and installed Shiv Linga and penanced himself for seeking redemption. It is located 22 kms off Panaji situated on the road to Ponda.

Naguesh Temple : Deity is Lord Shiva and Parvathi, built upon 1413 under Vijayanagar Dynasty, Veer Pratap Devraya was the king it is mentioned there. 25 kms off Panaji, on the road to Ponda.

Mangueshi Temple : 21 kms from Panaji.

Mallikarjun Temple : Located in the village called Sristhal, 5kms from Chaudi, 75 kms off Panaji.

Mahalakshmi Temple, Panaji : Located on the Dada Vaidya Road. This temple is nearer to a church. It is an example of communal harmony well maintained here.

Mahalakshmi Temple, Bandivate : 22kms off Panaji. Year of its existence is 1413. Dedicated to Godesses Mahalakshmi.

Anant Temple : Situated in Savoi-Verem village of Ponda Taluk, 45 kms from Panaji. Dedicated to Lord Anant.

Mahalasa Narayani Temple : 22 kms off Panaji built around 1543.

Devki Krishna : 17 kms off Panaji. It is only temple in India where Lord Krishna is worshipped along with mother Devaki and called as Devakikrishna.

BEACHES :

Varca, Cavelossim, Mobor Beach: Situated on the south of Benaulim, most frequented by tourists. Varieties of Goan food is available

Palolem Beach: White sand Beach, one can be ferried in boat to watch dolphins. 70 kms of Panaji.

Majorda Beach: About 5kms off Clova Beach. Majorda is the village where the Jesuits, fond as they were of the good things of life, discovered the best Goan toddy (sap from the coconut palm), which they used to leaven the bread. Naturally, then, Majorda is the place where the Goans were first trained in the delicate art of baking European breads.

Colva Beach : Most important beach modern amenities available here. The Church of Our Lady Of Mercy in Colva is famous for its miracle statue of Menino Jesus. The road leading from the Church to the beach is where all the facilities are located.

Bogmalo Beach : Only 4 kms off of Dabolim airport, is is mostly frequented. Wind surfing, skiing facitilies liked by foreigners.

Betul Beach : In the backdrop of hill Cabo De Rama, where Portugues built a Fort, viewing the sunset from fort is spectacular. The fishing activity is the major.

Benaulim Beach: 2 kms off south of Clova. Again 2 kms away from Clova is Benaulim, which is serene and beautiful. Benaulim is famous because legendary Parashuram's arrow landed, by which Goa was created. It is fairly crowded in the evenings and on weekends. The church of St.John is there on the hill is a worth to visit. Feast of St John the Baptist (Sao Joao) is celebrated as a thanksgiving. Young men wearing crowns of leaves and fruits tour the area singing for gifts. To commemorate the movement of St John in his mother’s womb when he was in his mother’s womb and visited by Mary, the mother of Jesus, the young men of this village jump in the wells.

Agonda Beach : From Palolem drive towards Panaji the next beach is Agonda. It is advised not to swim too far.

Vagator Beach : 22 kms off Panaji is a beautiful beach. crescent shaped and situated on the Caisua bay along the Chapora river basin, in the shadow of Chapora fort. During the tourist season, it is a favorite venue for mid night parties. There are a number of buses that run from Mapusa and Calangute Beach to Vagator. The nearest interstate bus station is at Mapusa, the KTC bus station.

Sinquerim Beach: Water skiing, para-sailing, scuba-diving and wind-surfing available. Wonderful 17th century Fort is there. 13 kms off Panaji.

Miramar Beach: One of the beautiful beach is 3kms off Panaji. From the beach one can view excellent Fort nmed Aguada. It is mostly favoured by locals and foreigners.

Calangute Beach : 15 kms from Panaji is called as Queen of Beaches. Huge showrooms filled with exquisite handicrafts from Kashmir, Tibet, Indonesia, Rajasthan and other exotic places line up the main road running towards Anjuna. But the beach as such is not the best of all. There are neither swaying palms nor are there any traditional boats lying there to add variety. The waves are bigger and heavier here due to the rapid drop.

Baga Beach: Coastline is spread across 35 kms. Arabian sea beginning at Fort Aguada further continues as Sinquerim Beach, again as Candolim Beach and merges into Calangute Beach and further to Baga beach and again Anjuna Beach and next to Vagator Beach at last ending at Chapora Beach and Fort.

Arjuna Beach : 18 kms off Panaji, 30 kms stretch. It has an unusual rocky formation overlying a cove of white sand and black rock that juts into the Sea.

Aguada Beach: Aguada beach is almost synonymous with the top-notch Fort Aguada Hotel complex, a superb hotel that is built on the cliff, around the remnants of the early 17th century Portuguese fort. Access to the beach is impossible through the hotel grounds, which are private, you can walk along Aguada beach.

The hotel has been constructed in three parts, consisting of expensive cottages on the upper reaches of the hillside, the fort jutting out to sea, and a delightful Goan village, with individual cottages. Drawn by the clientele of the hotel, Aguada beach has cafes, itinerant vendors of everything from Kashmiri carpets to massages, and a good range of water sports.

Candolim Beach : It is approached from Panaji. Water skiing facility along with other sports are available.

CHURCHES :

The Convent of St. Cajetan and Church of Divine Providence – beautiful church situated about half a kilometer away to the north east of the Se Cathedral replica of original design of the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome.

Church and College of St.Paul : The construction began in November 1541 and completed on January 25, 1543, the day of feast of Conversion of St. Paul to whom the church was dedicated.

St. Francis of Assisi, St.Augustine's Tower, The Reis Magos Church, Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, Church of St.Anne, Talaulim, Se Cathedral, Basilica of Bom Jesus are the other churches.

FORTS :

The ruins of the Fortress Colvale, Terekhol Fort, Reis Magos Fort, Rachol Fort, Corjuem Fort, Chapora Fort, Cabo Raj Niwas (Raj Bhavan), Cabo De Rama Fort, Aguada Fort are the forts.
